Smoking ban dies, one group’s hope lives on
March 19, 2008
A House of Delegates subcommittee may killed any remaining chance of a smoking ban in Virginia for 2008, but one group of advocates say the fight isn’t over. This year’s proposed legislation would’ve banned smoking in most public buildings, bars, and restaurants. Opponents of the ban say people should have the right to smoke where they want; supporters say second hand smoke is a killer.
Forty of those smoke-free advocates took party in this year’s Young Leaders Day at the Capitol. The group featured teachers, physicians, high school and college students and citizens from across the state. With funding and assistance provided by the American Cancer Society, the group assembled at the Library of Virginia.
“It’s time for the people of Virginia and for college students to have the right to breathe clean air,” said Linda Hancock, a supporter of smoke-free legislation.
Inside the General Assembly building, the group dispersed and traveled floor-by-floor lobbying for anti -smoking legislation.
“I lost my aunt in 2003 to the fight against breast cancer, so I’m really an advocate,” said Malcolm King, a Hampton University student.
Before leaving the General Assembly Building the group thanked legislators who supported their efforts.
But at the nearby Penny Lane Pub, some patrons fear a smoking ban would take away some of their personal liberties.
“I feel that’s my right; I just enjoy smoking,” said Anne Bonnelli.
“Virginia and North Carolina are going to be the last two states, there’s too much tobacco money to be made here for this [smoking legislation] to change overnight,” said Terry O’Neill, a worker at the pub.
A smoking ban won’t be passed for at least another year in Virginia.

Nice job on the picture, the links and getting the video posted. You still struggled to this story started, but I think between us, we have a decent lead.
I think there are times when something works well on tape, but not so well in text, so I deleted the Spruill portion of the pkg.
Don’t forget, too, that the Web offers the opportunity for you to provide MORE info, so you might have pulled some new quotes, added in some new facts – things you couldn’t get into the original story.
Overall, good effort.
