S.A.V.E.S throws carnaval d’ amour
April 2, 2008
The student group Sexual Assault and Dating Violence Education by Students, also known as S.A.V.E.S, threw their second annual Carnaval d’ Amour in the commons. Their goal was to raise awareness about sexual assault on college campuses. The topic is one that traditionally raises concern, but the way S.A.V.E.S presented the information was as nontraditional as it gets.
Instead of sitting at a table and presenting the uncomfortable information the old fashion way S.A.V.E.S turned it into a fun environment where people can play games to learn about relationships and sexual assault. With Co sponsors Voices for Planed Parenthood, Men Against Violence and the Office of Health Promotions at VCU S.A.V.E.S set up tons of fun games like couples jeopardy, condom count and bowling.
According to Co- President of S.A.V.E.S Kathryn Monusky the games are really used as ice breakers.
” Most of the games are kind of a way to get the message in a fun way. We have sex jeopardy so you are answering question about dating habits and sex habits. The fortune teller was a fun way to get information out about healthy relationships. Its just kind of a fun way to get information out.”
One thing I noticed while covering the event was the absences of males. So I asked Monusky why the males were so outnumber at this event and if they just plain don’t see sexual assault ass a big problem. Here is what she said:
Two questions. For Men, do you feel that women unfairly identify men as the only perpetrators of sexual assault? And would you feel comfortable attending an event like this?
Women, do you feel that sexual assault is a big issue on campus and do you feel safe on campus?
